MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR...
Thomishia "Mishi" Booker is the Chief Executive Officer and Author of Hey Carter! Books. (HCB).
She launched HCB in 2017 after being disappointed in the lack of representation for Black boys in children’s literature. Thomishia is a licensed social worker and earned a Doctorate in Education Counseling Psychology which serves as a foundation for writing children’s books about building self confidence and pride. HCB started as a passion project that she has built to successful brand that is changing narratives for Black children. Her journey to becoming an acclaimed self-published author didn’t come easy and she learned many lessons the hard way. She is passionate about sharing the knowledge she has acquired through her journey with her community.

In 2019, my business partner and I, both Social Workers with early childhood education experience, decided to write and publish our very first children’s book. With no knowledge of how to do this, we reached out to Thomishia Booker. I met Thomishia the year prior at a festival in Oakland and I remembered her being so welcoming and in tune with the importance of representation of Black characters in children’s literature. When I tell you that Thomishia is a life saver and played a vital role in getting us to the finish line. When we officially launched Black Girl, Brown Girl Books, Thomishia and all of her wealth of knowledge supported us step by step, covering everything from how to find a illustrator, graphic designer, connected us with a trademark and copyright law firm, helped with getting an ISBN, reviewed our manuscript and provided us with insightful feedback, helped us think through a marketing plan, she even purchased a copies of our first book, Soul Sisters and continued supporting us as she attended our very first in-person Authors Chat event.
Words can’t express how grateful we are for the mentorship, care, encouragement and support that Thomishia has provided us not only as a Publishing Company/Business but the support we’ve received as women of color doing intentional work in the literary world has been priceless.
